Turkey Travel Guide

When to go and what not to miss in Turkey — Istanbul astride two continents, the balloons of Cappadocia, the terraces of Pamukkale and the ruins of the Aegean.

Turkey straddles Europe and Asia in every sense: the domes and bazaars of Istanbul, the fairy-chimney valleys of Cappadocia where balloons rise at dawn, the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale, and Roman cities along the Aegean. It's a grand-tour country that still feels like great value.

Distances are large but flights are cheap and the food is a joy. Here's our short brief on timing and route.

Best time to go

April – JuneSpring — warm, green and clear, ideal for Istanbul, Cappadocia and the ruins before the summer heat.
September – NovemberAutumn — the other sweet spot, comfortable and less crowded, still warm on the coast.
July – AugustHot and busy inland, but peak season for the Mediterranean coast and gulet cruises.

What not to miss

IstanbulHagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar and a Bosphorus cruise between two continents.
CappadociaCave hotels, underground cities and a sunrise balloon over the valleys.
PamukkaleThe dazzling white terraces and the Roman ruins of Hierapolis above them.
EphesusOne of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world, near the Aegean coast.
The Turquoise CoastBlue cruises, ancient harbours and the beaches of the south-west.

Practical tips

  • Book Cappadocia's balloon early — it's weather-dependent and sells out; we build in a spare morning.
  • Dress respectfully at mosques (scarf for women, shoulders and knees covered); shoes come off.
  • Domestic flights save long drives between Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast.
  • Bargaining is part of the bazaar — do it with a smile over a glass of tea.
