New Zealand Travel Guide

When to go and what not to miss in New Zealand — Milford Sound and the Southern Alps, Queenstown's adventures, geothermal Rotorua and Middle-earth landscapes throughout.

New Zealand is scenery turned up to full: fiords and glaciers and the Southern Alps on the South Island; geothermal wonders, Maori culture and rolling green on the North. It's the self-drive trip par excellence, with an adventure — or a quiet lookout — around every bend.

Two islands are a lot for one week, so we usually focus. Here's our short brief.

Best time to go

December – FebruarySummer — warm, long days, everything open; peak season for the South Island and hikes.
March – April & October – NovemberShoulder — fewer crowds, autumn colour or spring bloom, still-fine weather.
June – AugustWinter — ski season around Queenstown, crisp and clear, quieter elsewhere.

What not to miss

Milford SoundA cruise beneath the cliffs and waterfalls of Fiordland — the country's showpiece.
QueenstownAdventure capital by a lake and mountains — bungee, jet-boat or just the views.
RotoruaGeysers, bubbling mud and Maori culture on the North Island.
Aoraki/Mount Cook & the glaciersThe Southern Alps, alpine lakes and the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers.
HobbitonThe Middle-earth movie set near Matamata — a hit with families and fans.

Visas & entry

Most visitors, including Malaysians, need an NZeTA (electronic travel authority) plus a tourism levy before flying. We'll arrange it so you land ready.

Practical tips

  • Distances take longer than the map suggests — the roads wind; we plan realistic driving days.
  • Pick one island to do it justice, or allow two-plus weeks for both.
  • Pack layers and a waterproof — mountain weather changes fast, even in summer.
  • Book Milford cruises and popular hikes ahead in the summer peak.
