Cambodia Travel Guide

When to go and what not to miss in Cambodia — the temples of Angkor at sunrise, the lake villages, Phnom Penh's history, and beaches on the southern coast.

Cambodia is defined by one of the wonders of the world — the vast temple city of Angkor near Siem Reap — but there is more to it: the floating villages of the Tonlé Sap, the moving history of Phnom Penh, and quiet beaches and islands on the southern coast.

It's warm, affordable and easily paired with Thailand or Vietnam. Here's our short brief.

Best time to go

November – FebruaryThe best window — dry and cooler, ideal for the temples and everywhere else.
March – MayHot; start temple visits at dawn and rest through the afternoon.
June – OctoberThe green wet season — lush, fewer crowds, the moat and lake full; brief downpours.

What not to miss

Angkor WatSunrise over the great temple, the faces of Bayon and the jungle-wrapped Ta Prohm.
Siem ReapThe base for Angkor, with a lively night market and Khmer food scene.
Tonlé SapThe stilt and floating villages of Southeast Asia's great lake.
Phnom PenhThe Royal Palace and the sobering but important Killing Fields and S-21.
The south coastKep, Kampot and islands like Koh Rong for a beach finish.

Practical tips

  • Buy a multi-day Angkor pass and go at dawn — beat the heat and the crowds to the best light.
  • Cover shoulders and knees to enter the temples; it's enforced at Angkor Wat's upper level.
  • US dollars are used everywhere alongside the riel; bring small, clean notes.
  • A knowledgeable guide brings Angkor's carvings and history alive — we always include one.
