Australia Travel Guide

When to go and what not to miss in Australia — Sydney's harbour, the Great Barrier Reef, the red-desert heart at Uluru, and the coasts, wine and wildlife in between.

Australia is a continent's worth of trip: Sydney's harbour and beaches, the coral of the Great Barrier Reef, the red-desert heart of the country at Uluru, and city, coast, wine and wildlife strung between them. Distances are big, so a good plan picks a region or two and does them well.

It's easy, English-speaking and family-friendly. Here's our short brief on when to go and where to focus.

Best time to go

September – November & March – MaySpring and autumn — mild across the south (Sydney, Melbourne) and comfortable in the centre.
June – AugustWinter down south, but the dry, warm season for the tropical north, the Reef and Uluru.
December – FebruarySummer — beach season in the south (and school holidays); hot and humid up north.

What not to miss

Great Barrier ReefSnorkel or dive the coral from Cairns or the Whitsundays.
UluruThe great red monolith at sunset in the heart of the outback.
Melbourne & the Great Ocean RoadLaneway cafés, then the Twelve Apostles along a spectacular coast.

Practical tips

  • Don't try to see it all — pick a coast or the centre; domestic flights are long.
  • The sun is fierce — hat, high-SPF and reef-safe sunscreen, especially on the water.
  • Seasons are reversed from the north — plan clothing accordingly.
  • For the Reef, choose an outer-reef operator; we point you to the good ones.
