Lake palaces that seem to float, a blue city, a golden desert fort, and colour everywhere. Rajasthan is India at its most cinematic. A slower look at the land of kings.
If Sri Lanka slows you down, Rajasthan sweeps you off your feet. This is India at its most cinematic, the old desert kingdom in the northwest, where the palaces are pink, the forts are gold, and everyone seems dressed for a festival you weren't told about. The Notes go there next, because few places on earth are this theatrical.
Udaipur: the city that floats
Built around Lake Pichola, Udaipur is the most romantic city in India, and I don't say that lightly. White palaces doubled in still water, a former royal residence turned hotel that looks like it's floating in the middle of the lake, rooftop dinners as the sun drops behind the hills. Take the evening boat. It's a cliché because it's genuinely wonderful.
Jodhpur: the blue city under the fort
In Jodhpur the great Mehrangarh fort rises sheer above a sea of indigo houses, the old town painted blue, lane after lane of it. Walk the ramparts for the view, then lose an hour in the bazaars below. Stand there long enough and you'll see why this skyline keeps turning up in films.
Jaisalmer: a fort of gold in the sand
Deeper into the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer is the colour of honey, a living fort where families still make their homes, ringed by carved sandstone havelis. The real magic waits just outside the walls: a camel out over the dunes at dusk, dinner around a fire, and a sky so thick with stars you lose track of what century it is.
Jaipur, and the colour of it all
The pink city finishes the loop. The honeycomb front of the Hawa Mahal, the elephant-backed swagger of Amber Fort, bazaars stacked with block-print, silver and embroidered jootis. Jaipur is where most Rajasthan journeys begin or end, and it sends you home stained through with colour.
Palaces you can sleep in, deserts you can ride into, hospitality with real ceremony behind it. Rajasthan is a lot, in the best way. Our Land of Kings journey threads it together at a pace that lets each city land properly. Talk to us and we'll shape it to you.
