Destination Notes: Japan, a Country That Rewards Attention

Cherry blossom over a Kyoto lane, a bullet train gliding past Fuji, a hot spring in the snow. Japan is a masterclass in doing small things beautifully.

Some countries impress you with size. Japan does it with attention: the care taken over a bowl of noodles, the train that leaves to the second, the way somebody rakes a garden. It's a place that rewards travellers who slow down enough to notice, which is precisely the sort of trip these Notes are for.

Kyoto, and the art of the small

Kyoto is where the old Japan still breathes. Walk the stone lanes of Higashiyama early, before the crowds arrive, past wooden teahouses and up toward the Yasaka pagoda. Slip into a moss garden and just sit for a while. If you're lucky you'll catch a geiko hurrying between appointments at dusk in Gion. Nothing here raises its voice. That's the whole idea.

The bullet train, and Mount Fuji

The shinkansen is a pleasure in itself. Silent, punctual to the minute, sliding through the countryside at a speed you can't quite feel. On a clear day somewhere between Tokyo and Kyoto, Mount Fuji swings into the window and the entire carriage reaches for a phone. For the postcard version, the Chureito pagoda frames Fuji above a froth of blossom in spring.

Cherry blossom, and why timing is everything

For a couple of weeks each spring the country turns pink and, in the best possible way, loses its head. Picnics under the trees, temples buried in blossom, a whole culture pausing to look up. But the bloom is brief, and it climbs north as the weeks pass, so a week either side is the difference between full flower and bare branches. This is a trip you want timed by somebody who actually watches the forecasts. We do.

Beyond the cities: onsen, snow and thatch

Trade the neon for a night in a ryokan, chin-deep in an outdoor onsen while the snow comes down. Walk the thatched farmhouses of Shirakawa-go under a white roof. Ride up to Hokkaido for powder and seafood. Japan in winter is a completely different country from Japan in blossom, and both are worth the airfare.

Few places reward a good plan the way Japan does: the right rail pass, seat reservations booked ahead, the correct season. That part's ours. Tell us the Japan you're after and we'll build it around the calendar.
